The future of the Veneto Port System is inextricably linked to the cooperation and decisions of the local authorities within whose territories our ports operate. For this reason, as I have emphasized since the beginning of my term of office, a positive and sincere dialogue between institutions is essential for building, together, the future of our port system.
The Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy is considering the Port of Venice for a central role in the new European system for the storage and handling of critical raw materials and rare earths, strategic assets for Europe’s industrial competitiveness and economic security.
In the period April 2025–March 2026, Venice exceeds 25 million tonnes (+4.4%). Chioggia approaches 900,000. Containers (+9.8%) and solid bulk stand out, with nearly 350,000 additional tonnes.
Venice, April 20, 2026 – The Simplified Logistics Zone (ZLS) confirms its role as a strategic instrument to encourage new productive investments in the Port of Venice. Thanks to simplified authorization procedures and shorter timelines, work is now beginning on a project to build a new plant dedicated to plastic recycling, promoted by Eco+Eco s.r.l. – a company of the VERITAS Group – an initiative that will contribute to the development of the circular economy and the industrial revitalization of the port.
The study, carried out by the Centro Studi Sintesi of CGIA Mestre, highlights the presence of 1,442 active companies and a value of production generated by the port system of approximately €15 billion. When accounting for direct, indirect and induced effects, this figure rises to €44.2 billion, contributing 6.5% to the regional GDP. Furthermore, the port system directly employs 26,898 people, while total employment — including the wider supply chain — involves 218,853 individuals, distributed across the metropolitan area (58%), the rest of Italy (28.2%) and the Veneto Region (13.8%).
The Pact for ecological restoration actions in the Venice Lagoon was signed today at Palazzo X Savi, headquarters of the Lagoon Authority. The document represents a shared commitment aimed at strengthening cooperation among institutions, the scientific community, civil society organisations and citizens in order to enhance the resilience of lagoon ecosystems.
Located at the top of the Adriatic Sea, the Veneto Port System – which includes the ports of Venice and Chioggia – is the closest access to Europe’s main manufacturing centres for goods coming from the south and a key resource for the area: on a total surface of 2,500 hectares, over 1,200 companies operate to serve supply and export chains of industries based in Northern Italy and Central Europe.
