Construction progresses on the new Railway Bridge

Construction of the new railway bridge over the Canale Ovest in Porto Marghera has entered a key phase. This strategic infrastructure is set to strengthen the area’s logistics and intermodal transport system.

One of the most significant ongoing activities is the installation of a tower crane, essential for construction operations. The crane has been placed on an artificial island built in the middle of the channel—an engineering solution designed to optimize in-channel works without disrupting navigation. The crane has a hook height of +45.40 meters above mean sea level and reaches a maximum height of +51.90 meters.

The crane’s positioning was defined with the support of the Capitaneria di Porto di Venezia to ensure high standards of safety and operational efficiency, allowing precise handling of the materials required for the bridge construction.

Special attention has been given to maintaining the continuity and safety of water traffic: the passage of vessels to and from the dock located at the head of the channel, as well as all boats transiting along the Canale Ovest, is guaranteed at every stage of the works. Activities are carefully coordinated to avoid interference with navigation, thanks to dedicated corridors and constant monitoring of operations.

The railway bridge, with a total investment of €28.48 million and completion scheduled for 2026, represents a key project for the development of intermodality. The new infrastructure will provide a more efficient connection to the national and European rail network, serving as a direct link to the port terminals located on the port island.

The goal is twofold: on the one hand, to enhance the competitiveness of the port system; on the other, to reduce road traffic impact and urban congestion. Shifting increasing volumes of freight to rail will improve overall logistics efficiency while significantly reducing pollutant emissions.

With construction progressing and the crane now installed, the project has entered a decisive operational phase, further strengthening the strategic role of Porto Marghera in the intermodal, port, and logistics landscape of Northeastern Italy.
