Final Event of the European Project “SUSPORT”

On Wednesday, June 21st, the final event of the European project “SUSPORT” – an acronym for “Sustainable Ports” – will take place in Trieste. The project is part of the Italy-Croatia 2014-2020 cross-border cooperation program, with a total budget of 7 million euros, coordinated by the Port of Trieste.

The North Adriatic Sea Port Authority, along with its ports in Venice and Chioggia, has played a key role as a partner. In fact, the last Steering Committee meeting of the project was hosted by the Venice Port Authority in Venice last March.

In addition to the Port of Venice, the Italian side involved the ports of Ravenna, Ancona, and Bari, the Venice International University, the Consortium for the Economic Development of Friuli (COSEF), the Development Agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Chieti, and the Institute for Transport and Logistics Foundation (ITL). On the Croatian side, participants included the ports of Rijeka, Dubrovnik, Ploce, Zadar, Split, the Dubrovnik-Neretva Region, and the Intermodal Transport Cluster.

The Ports of Venice and Chioggia have successfully achieved their objectives, with an investment of over half a million euros. Since the start of the project on July 1st, 2020, concrete actions have been implemented to improve environmental sustainability and enhance energy efficiency. These actions include the purchase of three environmentally friendly vehicles and the establishment of a new sustainable lighting network in the port and urban areas of Sant’Andrea, Santa Marta, and San Basilio in Venice. This intervention alone helps to prevent the emission of approximately 125 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year.
