Skills needed to work in the port
Specific skills are needed to work safely in the port environment.
Port activities are very diversified. These are some examples: organising teams, each with their own specific tasks; moving cargo from the hold to the yard; managing a container ship that has moored and is awaiting loading and unloading operations. Other activities might include communicating with the captain in English; phoning the Far East to organise an international transport; dealing with banks and insurance companies to discuss international trade issues.
CFLI's training programme
Training is a crucial tool for learning a specific skill. The training courses organised by CFLI and the hands-on training are aimed at enabling the professional growth of individuals and companies.
CFLI was established in 1993 and is fully controlled by the Venice Port Authority. Its courses aim at:
- supplying skills and competences that are mandatory by law (e.g. training the workplace safety managers);
- enabling companies to attain voluntary certifications (quality, safety, environment);
- teach the skills needed to be awarded on-site vocational licenses;
- improve/refresh managerial, organisation and operational skills for those who already work in the port;
- follow up the inclusion of new hires into different types of port companies.
The training supplied by CFLI is always taught by qualified teachers who are mainly field experts from public or private bodies. In addition to direct knowledge of their specific area of expertise, CFLI's teachers are always looking to improve their knowledge, they are excellent communicators and are able to assess the potential of participants and drive enthusiasm for the port's activities.
